Blueberry in type 2 diabetes

Abstract

Introduction: With the growing interest for dietary products, antiobesity and antidiabetic effects of berry fruits became a charming and mystify issue in public. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of blueberry on weight loss and glycemic regulation in type 2 diabetic patients.

Patients and methods: Twenty type 2 diabetic patients which had been treated by metformin were randomized into two groups. Both of the groups were adviced the same life style interventions. First group (n = 10) was additionally instructed to eat 30 g blueberry a day for a month. Metabolic parameters were evaluated at the beginning and at the end of one month of randomization.

Results: There was no significant difference between the weight loss of both groups (p = 0.99). Statistically significant difference was not found between groups for fasting plasma glucose, HbA1C, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride change either (p = 0.06, 0.86, 0.07, 0.83, respectively).

Conclusion: In this pilot study, we found that blueberry consumption did not provide weight loss or any improvement on glycemic control.
